Tree Damage: What to Look For

Do proper inspections of your trees after each seasonal change and storm, who knows your tree better than you, right? Look over all sides of the tree, both up close and from a distance, looking specifically for cuts or peeling bark. Branches without leaves and brittle bark are a tell-tale sign of potential hazards.

Leaning trees are another potential risk. No trees grow perfectly straight, and that’s ok, but an excessive lean causes poor weight distribution and root damage. Look for cracked or lifted soil on the side opposite of the lean and exposed roots.

Multiple trunks and splits can also be unstable. Look for a V or U-shaped multiple trunk, as they are a weak point for mature trees. The connective area where the trunks come together may lose strength and are more likely to split.
